In 1887, John Bartholomew's Gazetteer of the British Isles described Gartsherrie like this:

Gartsherrie, town (part of Coatbridge) and quoad sacra par., with ry. sta., Old Monkland par., Lanarkshire, pop. 9070; the sta. is 1¼. mile NW. of Coatbridge sta.; near the sta. is Gartsherrie House; Gartsherrie Ironworks (the Bairds') are on the Monkland Canal.
