In 1887, John Bartholomew's Gazetteer of the British Isles described Newton upon Ayr like this:
Newton upon Ayr, par. and suburb of town of Ayr, on right bank of river Ayr, 585 ac., pop. 6511; was made a burgh of barony at an early date, and now forms part of Ayr parl. burgh.
