In 1870-72, John Marius Wilson's Imperial Gazetteer of England and Wales described Pontnewydd like this:
PONTNEWYDD, a hamlet in the S W of Monmouthshire; on the Crumlin canal and the Western Valleys railway, 5¼ miles N by W of Newport. It has a station on the railway, and tin-plate works.
