In 1887, John Bartholomew's Gazetteer of the British Isles described Shettleston like this:
Shettleston, town and quoad sacra par., Barony par., Lanarkshire, 3 miles E. of Glasgow by rail - quoad sacra par., pop. 9238; town, pop. (including East Muir and Sandyhill) 3608; P.O.; is inhabited chiefly by colliers and agricultural labourers.
