In 1870-72, John Marius Wilson's Imperial Gazetteer of England and Wales described Whitstone like this:
WHITSTONE, a hundred in the centre of Gloucester; containing 16 parishes; and cut into two divisions, lower and upper. Acres, 12,364 and 14,612. Pop. in 1851, 9,104 and 4,656; in 1861, 13,786. Houses, 3,073.
