In 1870-72, John Marius Wilson's Imperial Gazetteer of England and Wales described Grumbalds Ash like this:
GRUMBALDS ASH, a hundred in Gloucester; around Chipping Sodbury, and contiguous to Wilts. It is cut into two divisions, lower and upper; the former containIng Chipping Sodbury parish, nine other parishes, and part of another; the latter containing Alderley parish, and nIne other parishes. Acres of the l. div., 16, 417; of the u. div., 25, 497. Pop. of both, 9, 738. house, 2, 935.
