In 1870-72, John Marius Wilson's Imperial Gazetteer of England and Wales described Purley like this:
PURLEY HOUSE, a seat in the E of Surrey; near the London and Brighton railway, 2½ miles S of Croydon. It belonged to Bradshaw, who presided at the trial of Charles I.; was the residence of Horne Tooke, whilewriting his " Diversions of Purley; " passed to the Goslings; and is now the seat of J. H. Smith, Esq.
