In 1887, John Bartholomew's Gazetteer of the British Isles described South Stockton like this:
Stockton, South, town with ry. sta., partly in Stockton on Tees par., Durham, but chiefly in Stainton par., North-Riding Yorkshire, on r. Tees, opposite Stockton and within its parl. limits, pop. 10,665; P.O., T.O.
