In 1887, John Bartholomew's Gazetteer of the British Isles described Seil like this:
Seil, island, Kilbrandon and Kilchattan par., Inner Hebrides, Argyllshire, 4 miles SE. of Mull, pop. 601; is separated by a narrow strait from the mainland; measures 4½ by 2½ miles in extreme length and breadth, and rises to an alt. of upwards of 800 ft.
