In 1887, John Bartholomew's Gazetteer of the British Isles described Inchmahome like this:

Inchmahome, island, in Iake of Menteith, SW. Perthshire; has remains of a priory of the 13th century. Inchmahome was the temporary residence of the young Mary Queen of Scots before her removal to France.
