In 1882-4, Frances Groome's Ordnance Gazetteer of Scotland described Blackridge like this:
Blackridge, a village on the SW border of Torphichen parish, Linlithgowshire, on Barbauchlaw Burn, 5½ miles WSW of Bathgate. It has a post office under Bathgate, a Free Church preaching station, and a public school.
