In 1882-4, Frances Groome's Ordnance Gazetteer of Scotland described Bruan like this:
Bruam, a village on the mutual border of Wick and Latheron parishes, Caithness, 8 miles SW of Wick town. A mission-house of the Church of Scotland, a very plain thatched building, with 585 sittings, was erected here chiefly in 1798, partly at a subsequent period, and had attached to it a manse for a missionary, with a glebe of 4 acres; and it originally was under the same charge as a mission-house at Berriedale, but became detached on the erection of the parliamentary church at Berriedale in 1826.
