In 1882-4, Frances Groome's Ordnance Gazetteer of Scotland described Enoch like this:
Enoch (Celt. aenach, ` a place of popular assembly '), a barony in Durisdeer parish, NW Dumfriesshire, between the Nith and Carron Water, belonging to the family of Menzies from the beginning of the 14th century till 1703, when it was sold to James, second Duke of Queensberry, thus coming in 1810 to the Duke of Buccleuch. Enoch Castle stood on a peninsular spot between a deep ravine and the Carron, and bore, on the lintel of its gateway, the date 1281.
