In 1887, John Bartholomew's Gazetteer of the British Isles described Fauldhouse like this:
Fauldhouse, town and quoad sacra par. with ry. sta., Whitburn par., Linlithgowshire, in extreme SW. of co., 6½ miles SW. of West Calder--par., pop. 3933; town, pop. (including Crofthead) 3000; P.O., T.O., 1 Bank; has paraffin works, and coal and ironstone mines.
