In 1882-4, Frances Groome's Ordnance Gazetteer of Scotland described Kirkchrist like this:
Kirkchrist, an ancient parish in the S of Kirkcudbrightshire, now forming the southern district of Twynholm parish. It remained a separate parish till at least 1605, probably till 1654; but was certainly annexed to Twynholm long before 1684. Its church and churchyard were situated on the right bank of the river Dee, opposite the town of Kirkcudbright; and the church is still represented by some ruins, while the churchyard continues to be in use. ...
A nunnery anciently stood somewhere on the southern border, and is commemorated in the names of two farms and a mill-High Nunton, Low Nunton, and Nunmill.—Ord. Sur., sh. 5, 1857.
