In 1870-72, John Marius Wilson's Imperial Gazetteer of England and Wales described Great Meolse like this:
MEOLSE (GREAT), a township in West Kirby parish, Cheshire; on the coast, and on the Hoylake railway, at Meolse r. station, 6½ miles W by N of Birkenhead. Acres, 3,883; of which 3,200 are foreshore-water. Real property, £883. Pop., 184. Houses, 34.
