In 1870-72, John Marius Wilson's Imperial Gazetteer of England and Wales described Rickergate like this:
RICKERGATE, a township in Carlisle, St. Mary parish, Cumberland; within Carlisle city. Acres, 290. Pop.in 1851, 3,098; in 1861, 3, 564. Houses, 641. The castle barracks and a workhouse are here; and, at the census of 1861, had 55 and 70 inmates.
