In 1870-72, John Marius Wilson's Imperial Gazetteer of England and Wales described Smannell like this:
SMANNELL, or Swanhill, a hamlet and a chapelry in Andover parish, Hants. The hamlet lies 1½ mile NE of Andover r. station. The chapelry was constituted in 1858, and bears the name of S.-with-Hatherden. Post town, Andover. Pop., 638. Houses, 139. The living is a p. curacy in the diocese of Winchester. Value, £100.* Patron, Winchester College.
