In 1887, John Bartholomew's Gazetteer of the British Isles described Florence like this:
Florence, rising and populous place, Stone and Trentham pars., W. Staffordshire, 2 miles SW. of Newcastle under Lyme; it is being built upon the grounds of the Duke of Sutherland, with the intention of forming a large suburban town for the Potteries.
