In 1887, John Bartholomew's Gazetteer of the British Isles described Bicester like this:
Bicester, par. and market town with ry. sta., in NE. of co. and 10½ miles NE. of Oxford, 3740 ac., pop. 3306; P.O., T.O., 1 Bank, 4 newspapers. Market-day, Friday; has lace and sacking mfrs. B. House is in the vicinity.
