In 1870-72, John Marius Wilson's Imperial Gazetteer of England and Wales described Ningwood like this:
NINGWOOD, a hamlet in Shalfleet parish, Isle of Wight; 6½ miles W of Newport. The manor belonged to Baldwin, Earl of Devon; and was given by him to Christchurch-Twynham priory.
