In 1870-72, John Marius Wilson's Imperial Gazetteer of England and Wales described Pipewell like this:

PIPEWELL, an extra-parochial tract in Kettering district, Northampton; 5½ miles N N W of Kettering. Acres, 2,070. Pop., 121. The manor, with P. Hall, belongs to O. W. H. Hambrough, Esq. A Cistertianabbey was founded here, in 1143, by W. Butevileyn; and has left some traces. There is a free school.
