In 1887, John Bartholomew's Gazetteer of the British Isles described New Southgate like this:
Southgate, New, vil. with ry. sta. (for Colney Hatch), Edmonton par., and eccl. dist., partly also in Fryern Barnet par., Middlesex - dist., pop. 3006; the vil. is 3 miles SE. of New Barnet sta. by rail.
