In 1887, John Bartholomew's Gazetteer of the British Isles described Thorpe Hamlet like this:
Thorpe, township and eccl. dist. (Thorpe St Matthew), Thorpe St Andrew par., Norfolk, in bor. of Norwich, 730 ac., pop. 2864; P.O., called Thorpe Hamlet.
