In 1870-72, John Marius Wilson's Imperial Gazetteer of England and Wales described Burgate like this:
BURGATE (Middle, North, and South), three tythings in Fordingbridge parish, Hants; on the river Avon, from 1 to 2½ miles N of Fordingbridge. Real property, £1,964, £2,619, and £1,473. Pop., 659, 129, and 609. Burgate House belongs to the family of Coventry.
