In 1870-72, John Marius Wilson's Imperial Gazetteer of England and Wales described Alverstone like this:

ALVERSTON, an ancient manor in Brading parish, Isle of Wight; on the Yar river, 2 miles SW of Brading. Its Saxon proprietor, Tovi, was allowed to retain possession at the Conquest. A free chapel was founded on it by the Strangways, but has gone to ruin.
