In 1870-72, John Marius Wilson's Imperial Gazetteer of England and Wales described Chillerton like this:
CHILLERTON, a hamlet in Carisbrooke and Wootton parishes, Isle of Wight; 3¾ miles S by W of Newport. It has a post office under Newport. Pop., 244. Chillerton vale is a fine narrow gorge intersecting the chalk downs.
