In 1870-72, John Marius Wilson's Imperial Gazetteer of England and Wales described Newbridge like this:

NEWBRIDGE, a hamlet in the W of the Isle of Wight; on a headstream of the Newton river, 1 mile N W of Calbourne. Spots abounding with fossils, and interesting to geologists, abound in its neighbourhood.
