In 1870-72, John Marius Wilson's Imperial Gazetteer of England and Wales described Totton like this:
TOTTON, a hamlet in the SW of Hants; on the Southampton and Dorchester railway, near the head of Southampton water, ¾ mile WSW of Redbridge. It has a post-office‡ under Southampton, and a r. station.
