In 1870-72, John Marius Wilson's Imperial Gazetteer of England and Wales described Redworth like this:
REDWORTH, a township in Heighington parish, Durham; on the Clarence railway, 7 miles N N W of Darlington. It has a post-office under Darlington. Acres, 1,840. Real property, £1, 895. Pop., 325. Houses, 70. R. House is the seat of R. Surtees, Esq. A Danish mount of observation, with a triple terrace, is at Shackleton.
