In 1887, John Bartholomew's Gazetteer of the British Isles described Woolacombe like this:

Woolacombe, hamlet, Devon, on Morte Bay, 2 miles W. of Morthoe sta. Woolacombe Sands commence here and stretch southwards along the coast for 3½ miles to Baggy Point.
