In 1870-72, John Marius Wilson's Imperial Gazetteer of England and Wales described Rookley like this:
ROOKLEY, a tything, conjoint with Week, in Godshill parish, Isle of Wight; near the river Medina, 3¼ miles S by E of Newport. It has a post-office, designated Rookley, Isle of Wight. Pop., 265. The manor belonged anciently to a family of its own name.
