In 1870-72, John Marius Wilson's Imperial Gazetteer of England and Wales described St Johns Park like this:
JOHN 'S-PARK (ST.), a suburb of Ryde, on the S side of that town, in the Isle of Wight. The estate on which it stands belongs to the Simeon family; and a mansion on it was built by the first Lord Amherst, and commemorates the reduction of St. John's in New BrunswickThe site of the suburb was once all beautiful meadow; is now dotted with Villas; and promises soon to be covered with a town, larger than all Ryde was in 1830.
