In 1870-72, John Marius Wilson's Imperial Gazetteer of England and Wales described Ystradmynach like this:
YSTRAD, or Ystradymynach, a hamlet adjacent to the mutual boundary of Monmouth and Glamorgan; on the Rhymney Valley railway, 10¼ miles N of Cardiff. It has a post-office under Cardiff.
