In 1887, John Bartholomew's Gazetteer of the British Isles described Manod like this:
Manod, ry. sta., Merioneth, 2 miles N. of Festiniog; in vicinity are the adjacent summits of Manod-mawr (Great Mass) and Manod-fach (Little Mass), reaching in Manod-mawr an alt. of 2171 ft.
