In 1870-72, John Marius Wilson's Imperial Gazetteer of England and Wales described Penmaen Pool like this:

PENMAEN-POOL, a railway station in the W of Merioneth; at the terminus of a branch of the Aberystwith and Welsh Coast railway, under Cader-Idris, near the head of the Mawddach estuary, 3½ miles W S W of Dolgelly.
