In 1870-72, John Marius Wilson's Imperial Gazetteer of England and Wales described Halmer End like this:
HALMER-END, a liberty in Audley parish, Stafford; 4½ m. NW of Newcastle-under-Lyne. Real property, £, 845; of which £600 are in mines. Pop. in 1851, 1, 049; in 186, , 275. Houses, 276. The increase of pop. arose from the extension of coal mining.
