In 1870-72, John Marius Wilson's Imperial Gazetteer of England and Wales described Hele like this:

HELE, a hamlet in Bradninch parish, Devon; adjacent to the Bristol and Exeter railway, 3½ miles SW of Collumpton. It has a station with telegraph on the railway, and a post office under Collumpton.
