In 1870-72, John Marius Wilson's Imperial Gazetteer of England and Wales described Moorgate like this:
MOORGATE, a hamlet in Clarborough parish, Notts; on thew Chesterfield canal, suburban to the NE side of East Retford. Pop., 1,007. A chapel of ease to Clarborough is here, and was erected in 1828.
