In 1870-72, John Marius Wilson's Imperial Gazetteer of England and Wales described Wedgwood like this:

WEDGWOOD, a township in Wolstanton parish, Stafford; near Newcastle-under-Lyne. Real property in 1860, £829. Pop. in 1851, 157; in 1861, 783. Houses, 140. The increase of pop. arose from the extension of the pottery trade, and from the erection of blast furnaces and ironworks.
