In 1870-72, John Marius Wilson's Imperial Gazetteer of England and Wales described Lofthouse like this:

LOFTHOUSE (HIGH and Low), two hamlets in Fountains-Earth township, Kirkby-Malzeard parish, W. R. Yorkshire; near the river Nidd, 8 miles N of Pateley-Bridge. There are a Wesleyan chapel and a charity school.
