In 1870-72, John Marius Wilson's Imperial Gazetteer of England and Wales described Midhope like this:
MIDHOPE, a chapelry, containing the small villages of Midhope-Stones and Upper Midhope, in Ecclesfield parish, W. R. Yorkshire; on the river Little Don, 2½ miles SW by S of Penistone r. station. Post town, Penistone, under Sheffield. Rated property, £780. Pop., about 340. The property is divided among a few; but the Bosville estate is far the largest. The living is a p. curacy in the diocese of York. Value, £64. Patron, G. W. B. Bosville, Esq. The church is ancient. There is a slightly endowed school.
