In 1870-72, John Marius Wilson's Imperial Gazetteer of England and Wales described Gwaithla like this:
GWYTHLA, a hamlet in Llanfihangel-Nantmellan parish, Radnorshire; on a stream of its own name, 3¼ miles SW of Radnor. The stream has, in the vicinity of the hamlet, a fall called "Water-break-its-neck, " and it runs to the river Arrow, near Kington.
