In 1870-72, John Marius Wilson's Imperial Gazetteer of England and Wales described Newbridge like this:
NEWBRIDGE, a hamlet in Huish parish, Devon; about a mile from Huish church. It was the birthplace of Saunders, the demonstrator of anatomy at St. Thomashospital, London, and author of works on the diseases of the eye and the ear.
