In 1870-72, John Marius Wilson's Imperial Gazetteer of England and Wales described Nutwell like this:
NUTWELL, a hamlet in Woodbury parish, Devon; on the river Exe, and on the Exmouth railway, 2½ miles S S E of Topsham. Nutwell Court was transmuted from a castle into a handsome mansion, by Lord Dinham, in the time of Edward IV.; passed to Lord Heathfield; is now the seat of Sir T. T. F. Drake, Bart.; and contains a portrait and relics of Sir Francis Drake. Nutwell House also is a genteel residence.
