In 1870-72, John Marius Wilson's Imperial Gazetteer of England and Wales described Barnscar like this:
BARNSCAR, a ruined town on Birkby Fell, 3½ miles E of Ravenglass, Cumberland. Traces of streets and houses occur throughout an area of about 300 yards by 100: and some silver coins have been found. But the history of the place has perplexed antiquaries.
Barnscar is now part of CUMBERLAND Unitary Authority. Click here for graphs and data of how CUMBERLAND has changed over two centuries. For statistics about Barnscar itself, go to Statistics.
