In 1870-72, John Marius Wilson's Imperial Gazetteer of England and Wales described Ravenhead like this:
RAVENHEAD, a hamlet in Prescot parish, Lancashire; on the Sankey canal, 1 mile S W of St. Helens. It has collieries and extensive glass-works.
