In 1887, John Bartholomew's Gazetteer of the British Isles described Maiden Bower like this:
Maiden Bower, Topcliffe par., North-Riding Yorkshire, 4½ miles SW. of Thirsk; has traces of the Percys' seat, where Charles I. was imprisoned previous to being delivered up to the Scottish army.
