In 1887, John Bartholomew's Gazetteer of the British Isles described Mossley Hill like this:
Mossley Hill, eccl. dist. and ry. sta., Child wall and Tpxteth Park pars., SW. Lancashire, on SE. side of Liverpool - dist., pop. 573; P.O.; the sta. (for Aigburth) is 4 miles SE. of Lime Street sta., Liverpool; adjacent is Mossley House, seat.
