In 1870-72, John Marius Wilson's Imperial Gazetteer of England and Wales described Shadwell like this:
SHADWELL, a hamlet in Rushford parish, Norfolk; on the river Brandon, 3¼ miles E of Thetford. It takesits name from a spring called St. Chad's well, formerlymuch frequented by pilgrims. S. Court is the seat of Sir R. J. Buxton, Bart.
